About MENRIS
The International Centre
for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is a multidisciplinary knowledge
development and learning centre for issues related to integrated mountain development,
especially in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. ICIMOD’s specialist Division MENRIS
(Mountain Environment and Natural Resources' Information System) focuses on technologies
and applications related to geographic information and remote sensing systems, and
especially application of geoinformation and earth observations in mountain environments.
The Division was established with the aim of helping to bridge the data and information
gaps related to integrated mountain development in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH)
region.
ICIMOD through its MENRIS Division has established itself as an internationally
recognised, regional resource centre providing integrated and innovative solutions
that integrate geo-information and remote sensing data to support informed decision-making
for sustainable mountain development in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. The Division’s
geospatial team works with ICIMOD’s programmes to mainstream geo-based solutions,
and customises international knowledge for regional use through strategic alliances
and partnerships. The goals are pursued through innovation and technology transfer,
capacity building and scaling up, development of mountain-specific applications
and decision support systems, and provision of a clearing-house mechanism for geo-information
and earth observations to a network of partners and agencies involved in sustainable
mountain development. Geo spatial information and resources are made widely available
through the Mountain GeoPortal
maintained by the Division within the ICIMOD website.
