Methods and Tools
One of the core functions of ICIMOD is to work as a facilitator and establish itself
as a hub for mountain specific information and knowledge using modern geo-ICT tools
and techniques. Together with the capacity building and networking activities, one
of the basic requirements is implementation of innovative tools and methods for
data identification, collection, archiving, accessing, visualisation, and analysis
of mountain resources. Since its inception, MENRIS has developed innovative geo-based
tools and methods to be used in various geographic information system/ remote sensing
(GIS/RS) application environments. ICIMOD and its regional partners have forged
strategic alliances with key international agencies to customise international knowledge
in order to adapt relevant knowledge to mountain specific situations.
The tools and methods that have been developed are based on both soft and hard system
approaches that include open source environment, proprietary system, and custom
made solutions. The available tools include a range of methods such as data identification
and field based techniques, data and metadata management, data standardisation and
exchange protocols, data packaging and dissemination, a GIS e-learning environment,
participatory GIS, advanced data analysis, spatial visualisation and interactive
mapping, and online access.
These tools and methods are being used in a wide variety of applications – natural
resource management, environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation and management,
cryosphere mapping and monitoring, disaster risk assessment, land cover and REDD,
climate change studies, and others. This section of the Mountain GeoPortal provides
an overview of tools and methods with relevant information, and made freely available
for use in mountain development applications.
